Safety tips

Most people on localfiles.ca are neighbours just like you. These habits keep it that way.

Meet in public

Choose a busy, well-lit place — a coffee shop, mall entrance or library. Bring a friend, and tell someone where you're going.

See it first

Look at the item, room or vehicle in person before paying. For rentals, view the unit and meet the landlord at the property.

Never pay ahead

Don't send deposits, e-transfers or gift cards to someone you haven't met. Be wary of anyone who says they're "out of town".

Protect your details

Share only what's needed. Never give out your SIN, banking passwords or one-time codes. No real buyer needs them.

Common scams to watch for

  • Overpayment: a buyer sends more than the price and asks you to refund the difference. The first payment later bounces.
  • Fake rentals: a great price, an owner who can't show the place, and pressure to pay a deposit to "hold" it.
  • Job "training fees": real employers never charge you to apply, train or start work.
  • Verification codes: someone asks you to read back a code sent to your phone. That code unlocks your accounts — never share it.
  • Shipping only: a "buyer" who won't meet and insists on a courier or a payment link they send you.

For specific categories

  • Cars: check the vehicle history, meet at a safe location, and complete the ownership transfer at a ServiceOntario centre.
  • Home food: ask about ingredients and allergens before ordering.
  • Child care: ask for references, and check them, before arranging care.
